In times of ever-increasing needs of yields of crops and decreasing crop inputs such as water and fertiliser, agricultural biotechnology is playing a very significant role by helping in meeting the food needs of evolution.
Agricultural biotechnology incorporates biotechnology into crop production and protection. It involves using techniques to increase the size of crop yield, make crops resistant to disease caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses, and give them the ability to better withstand harsher elements.
Agricultural biotechnology has also contributed to bettering the built-in defence systems of plants and has opened up new avenues allowing us to work with nature by providing new bio pesticides. These new pesticides target crop pests but do not harm humans, animals, birds, fish and insects; they are also beneficial as they can control pests which have become resistant to the more conventional pesticides.
Agricultural biotechnologists can choose to specialise in molecular biology areas such as genomics, or related fields such as bioinformatics, public communication, regulatory affairs, and patent law.
Ideally, candidates are required to have expertise in the following key areas: executing molecular bio oriented R&D/ consultancy projects as well as the projects for setting up Biotech Labs for GM crops, Molecular Markers, Tissue Culture, and Plant Transformation; Protease Inhibitors and their use in modifying the physiology of the plant from the point of view of Biotic and Abiotic stress; functional genomics of important crop plants; and handling commercial aspects and managing business operations for generation business for the consultancy projects.
