Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Elfenbein laboratory is located within the Department of Clinical Sciences. The department is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering healthcare and wellness through discovery and clinical research, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.
The Department of Clinical Sciences has more than 70 faculty members, 54 residents, interns, and post-doctoral fellows, 12 graduate students, 25 research technicians and 3 administrative staff. The department provides learning opportunities within the four-year veterinary curriculum (educational information) and through continuing education for practitioners. Within the Veterinary Health Complex, faculty and staff provide care for patients, teach veterinary students, and provide advanced training for interns and residents.
Faculty are very active in research programs to improve the health and welfare of animals and people. The Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program allows graduate students to focus their research in the areas of cell biology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, pathology, and population medicine. Other graduate programs with which departmental faculty are affiliated include programs in microbiology, chemistry, immunology, physiology, toxicology, genetics and functional genomics. Faculty are also involved with the Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology graduate program.
Essential Job Duties
The Elfenbein laboratory is a molecular microbiology laboratory interested in the mechanisms by which Salmonella colonizes animal and human hosts. We use relevant animal models of disease to study the genes needed by Salmonella to colonize the intestine and cause disease. In addition, we are interested in how Salmonella interacts with the innate immune system. The selected individual will perform experiments both in vitro and using animal models to study Salmonella gene function in diverse conditions.
The selected individual will join a team of enthusiastic individuals. He/she is expected to have strong communication and interpersonal skills and teamwork. Research activities include bacterial growth analysis in different conditions, performance of molecular and biochemical assays, analysis of gene expression, and method development. The selected individual is expected to keep excellent records, strictly follow protocols, and discuss and analyze experimental findings. The individual will understand the rationale for the research, and perform related experiments to test research hypotheses. Procedures will include molecular and cell biological techniques on bacterial cultures and animal infection experiments. Research efforts will contribute toward publications, presentations, and grant submission.
Approximately 10-20% of the position’s time will be dedicated to laboratory management activities, which include ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment; completion of compliance paperwork including safety plan, biological use, and animal care and use protocols; maintaining stock solutions; autoclaving; and supervision of temporary undergraduate assistants. The selected individual is expected to have excellent communication skills, both with the PI and students within the laboratory, and will be expected to work well independently and within a team.
Must have Bachelor’s degree in biological science, preferably microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field and experience with molecular microbiology skills.

Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the following:
1. Microbiology experience
2.Genetic manipulation of bacteria including cloning
, and protein extraction
5.Gel electrophoresis and northern/Southern/western blotting
