Location/Division Specific Information

The Microarray Research Services Laboratory (MRSL) in the Genetic Sciences Division of Thermo Fisher Scientific seeks an experienced and highly motivated manager to lead a team of talented bioinformatics scientists in the analysis and interpretation of complex genomic data obtained from custom, high throughput laboratory services. Oversight will include management of customer projects from initiation through custom analysis and report generation. The Bioinformatics team will work with data obtained from technologies such as DNA microarrays and next generation sequencing platforms for genotyping, gene expression applications and other related technologies.

How will you make an impact?

The manager will work closely with other managers, scientists and engineers to manage the pipeline of customer projects and services. The successful candidate with excel at developing and applying streamline approaches to the analysis and reporting of genomic data, and provide analytical support to characterize platform performance for continuous process improvement of internal workflows.

What will you do?

Hands-on, working manager with direct reports. Provides coaching/training/development to subordinates.

Ownership of project management and timelines, ensure schedules and commitments are met in a timely manner.

Communicates regularly with customers to ensure timely response to their needs and continually strives to exceed their expectations.

Familiarity working with large, complex data sets and support of data interpretation.

Supports internal and external inquiries regarding project status and data interpretation and quality.

Prepare summary statistics of customer data for reporting.

Complies with GDPR practices, company standards and policies as it pertains to data management.

Develop new software applications or customize existing applications to meet specific scientific project needs.

Interact with research and product development teams to keep abreast and implement new data analysis tools and software.

Interface with several cross-functional groups within the company and with our scientific customers.

How will you get here?


Bachelors, Masters or PhD in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Molecular Biology or related field with a solid background in applied data analysis.


Minimum of 3 years prior management experience leading a technical group is a must.

Must possess exceptional communication skills, strong initiative and demonstrated ability to take ownership of challenging problems is essential.

Ability to lead, motivate and inspire a team.

Must be able to work as part of a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team.

Experience in analysis of microarray and sequence data is highly desired. Experience with other genomic technologies considered a plus.

Ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative environment to meet deadlines and excel in customer satisfaction.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Experience with statistical data analysis software (such as R, S, Splus, SAS or Matlab) and programming skills in a scripting language (such as Perl, Python or Ruby).

Relational database experience (PostgreSQL, Oracle) is a plus.
