Position Description

Stains, mounts, and studies human body cells to detect evidence of cancer and other pathological conditions, following established standards and practices. Receives cytology specimens sent to the laboratory and plans the optimum method of preparation to process specimens. Assists physicians with sampling/preparation of fine needle aspirations. Reports and maintains patient test results data in an accurate and timely manner. Stains and cover slips slides and examines human body cells to detect evidence of cancer or other disease conditions. Classifies slides, records classification, and presents slides with unusual cell structures to pathologist for further examination. Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed. Maintains good relations with medical staff, and other departments, as well as clients that use cytology services. Follows all safety regulations and departmental polices. Participates in continuing education. Assists with teaching students, residents, and fellows in training. Assists co-workers as needed and volunteers for extra assignments. Completes work within established times

Position Requirements

Must have a Baccalaureate degree in a scientific discipline: Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry, Diagnostics Genetics, Microbiology or Virology, Molecular Biology or pathology, Medical Technology or clinical lab science. Have ASCP certification as a Cytotechnologist CT(ASCP).

Preferred Requirements

One year clinical rotation or lab practicum and/or two years clinical experience preferred
