Our Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time BIOINFORMATICS SOFTWARE DEVELOPER. This position will provide analytical and operational support for a state-of-the art clinical laboratory performing cutting edge molecular diagnostic clinical assays through development of bioinformatics, web, and database applications. This position will work closely with faculty members and staff, and collaborate with other Senior Computer Specialists and Software Engineers in the department as needed to achieve goals. RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop Next- Generation Sequencing Data Analysis Software Pipelines Encode new software, debug and maintain existing software Execute data analysis applications to support clinical testing Create new platforms for tests in development Adapt existing pipelines to new instrumentation and testing platforms Suggest technical fixes and code improvements Troubleshoot software and hardware issues related to data analysis Suggest pipeline configuration improvements Optimize and parallelize data analysis pipelines Design and Construct Applications and Databases Create new SQL databases, maintain existing databases Design and construction of web-based decision support tools providing interpretive information for health care providers Integrate data from the laboratory instruments, clinical laboratory, and analytical pipelines Interface data sequencing from platform (currently Illumina) Update laboratory record-keeping applications Organize data for summarization and visualization Maintain infrastructure for efficiency of servers and networks Troubleshoot infrastructure issues Suggest updates of infrastructure to support growth and efficiency This position provides opportunities to work in a fast-paced, challenging, diverse and rewarding environment. REQUIREMENTS: BS or Masters in Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, Physics, Applied Math or a related discipline OR extensive professional experience in software design and/or development or Bioinformatics Fluency in Python is required, although less experienced candidates with extensive expertise in other programming languages will be considered Experience developing software using modern tools and procedures for version control, unit testing, documentation, and code review Extensive experience with Linux or other Unix-like environments Fluency with SQL Experience with manupulation and analysis of large data sets Experience with commonly used software tools for biological sequence analysis Excellent spoken and written communication and documentation skills DESIRED: Basic understanding of molecular biological concepts Skills with LINUX/UNIX system administration Formal training in Bioinformatics or Statistics Experience with cloud computing services such as Amazon AWS Knowledge of next-generation sequencing principles Experience in development of or contribution to open source projects Experience with molecular biology or clinical microbiology Wet-bench experience performing PCR and sequencing-based assays Experience with molecular diagnostics CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: May need to work holidays and weekends Lab Medicine employees may be required to work in any of the department locations including but not limited to HMC, UWMC, Roosevelt, SCCA, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCH, the Rosen Building, etc. Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather
