OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE :

This position requires an acknowledged technical and strategic expert whose primary role is to provide genomics and genetic leadership, research planning and decision making in assigned Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Neurogastroenterology, and Motility disease projects in the preclinical and clinical stages.

This is a highly visible and matrixed role, responsible for

partnering with Gastro-Intestinal drug discovery unit (GI-DDU) Discovery Research scientists, Translational Biomarker Research leads, Physician Scientists, Biostatisticians, and Computational Biologists and work in project teams to define program strategy for transcriptomics, genomics, pharmacogenomics, and genetics relevant to patients in clinical studies. Work closely with functional line leadership to develop Genomics and Genetics plans as part of the overall Asset Strategy in the Global Product Teams through all stages of Research, clinical development, and post-market activities.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Partner with GI-DDU Discovery Research Leads, Translational Biomarker Leads and Physician Scientists in defining and executing fit-for-purpose transcriptomics, genomics, pharmacogenomics, and genetics strategies for translational studies in targeted pathways in the discovery research stages and define candidate gene polymorphisms, and transcriptomics gene sets to be used for patient selection, as surrogates of drug efficacy, understand drug mechanism of action, and safety.

Lead Translational Genomics and Genetics strategy development and execution to support the clinical stage portfolio, including the biomarker driven clinical studies, implementation of novel technologies and incorporation of biomarker endpoints for decision making in early-stage clinical trials.

Collaborate across multiple sites and functional areas, working closely with Translational Biomarker Leads, Physician Scientists, Discovery Research scientists, Clinical Study Leads, Statistical Genetics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biologists and nonclinical colleagues build consensus for a fit-for-purpose Translational Genomics and Genetics strategy

As a subject-matter expert, collaborate with Translational Biomarkers Research Lead on Project and Global Product Teams to provide Translational Genomics and Genetics strategy to support translational medicine goals for progression of program from discovery research through clinical development and to support overall asset strategies

Evaluate and utilize state-of-the-art scientific tools and implement cutting-edge technology to drive innovation in the fit-for-purpose validation and execution of transcriptomics, genomics, pharmacogenomics, and genetics assays, data reporting and visualization platforms, ensuring high scientific quality

Participate in large academic/industry partnerships/consortia and leverage data from large biobanks (including UK Biobank; IBD-Plexus; Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation; FNIH) to support GI-DDU programs

Responsible for the preparation and review of transcriptomics, genomics, pharmacogenomics, and genetics sections of candidate nomination documents, clinical protocols and documents submitted to Regulatory Agencies

Support Business Development efforts by evaluating potential in-licensing opportunities and serve as a liaison with external companies, organizations, consultants, university representatives, NIH, and with Regulatory Agencies, as required

Establish and maintain scientific dialog with KOLs and Genomics and Genetics experts in medical, academic, and regulatory communities

DIMENSIONS AND ASPECTS

Outstanding expertise and depth of knowledge within transcriptomics (including next-generation sequencing-NGS), genomics, pharmacogenomics and genetics platforms for translational biomarkers applications

Collaborate with statistical genetics, bioinformatics and computational biology colleagues to integrate data from large human genetic datasets, including GWAS, RVAS, eQTL/pQTL studies, and Mendelian genetics and visualize transcriptomics TSNE, genomic data, association studies using transcriptomics, genetic and genomic data

Keeps up with the cutting-edge scientific advancement and maintain extensive knowledge of research and development efforts (e.g. competitive landscape, new technology, new research portfolio, and new partnerships)

Operate in matrix environment providing Translational genomics and genetics expertise  on discovery and development teams

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

PhD or MD/PhD degree in relevant field with 8 years of experience

At least 3 years of experience in translational genomics and genetics research.

Experience in any combination of the following areas is required: transcriptomics (including NGS), genomics, pharmacogenomics, and genetics (multiple openings at different levels commensurate with experience).

Experience working with and manipulating large genomic, transcriptomics data sets and familiarity with R programming environment, AI and machine learning based models is desirable.

Recognized expertise in translational genomics and genetics discovery and development as demonstrated by publications, regulatory submissions and/or national or international presentations

Excellent understanding of drug development, regulatory processes, and clinical development

Strong leadership abilities and proven ability to lead a team within a matrix organization as well as work independently

Strong analytical, oral and written communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Requires approximately 15 - 25% travel. Some international travel may be required.
