Assists a Cytology Laboratory Technologist Supervisor in the operation of a large cytology laboratory unit by resolving technical problems, developing recommendations on a new or alternative methods, materials, and equipment, and assigning, training, and reviewing the work of journey-level technologists.
Essential Job Functions
Assigns work to a group of Cytology Laboratory Technologist I's and assists them in solving problems connected with the preparation and processing or microscopic examination of slides of human cell samplings.
Expedites the flow of work through the laboratory; follows up to determine reasons for technician failure to meet expected production volume.
Determines daily count of abnormal cases each technician must review with pathologist for final diagnosis; schedules technician time for such review with pathologist.
Assists the Cytology Laboratory Technologist Supervisor in orienting new technicians to the laboratory and to the specific procedures established by the laboratory for the preparation, processing and microscopic examination of specimens.
Re-screens, during absence of or at the request of the Cytology Laboratory Technologist Supervisor, a specified percentage of cases each technician has reported as negative.
Counsels technicians in the correct interpretation of difficult cases.
Investigates difficulties encountered in preparing, processing or staining specimens or problems of equipment malfunction and takes or recommends appropriate action for their resolution.
Assists the laboratory supervisor in the identification of new methods, materials, equipment or other items of supply that appear to warrant investigative evaluation.
Participates in experiments to evaluate the feasibility or adaptability of products or procedures into regular laboratory operations, and in the setup and standardization of new equipment.
Functions as designated relief for the Cytology Laboratory Technician Supervisor when the latter must be absent from the laboratory.
Three (3) year's experience at the level of Cytology Laboratory Technologist I* in an approved laboratory**.
Cytotechnologist's certificate issued by the California State Department of Health***.
PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light:
Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.
A Master's degree in Medical Technology from an accredited**** university.

*Experience at the level of Cytology Laboratory Technologist I in the County of Los Angeles is defined as:prepares and microscopically examines slides of human cell samplings for the presence of disease or other abnormality..
**An approved laboratory is defined as a clinical laboratory that has a federal issued Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment Laboratory Certificate of Accreditation that authorizes the laboratory to accept human specimens for the purpose of performing laboratory examinations, and is accredited by the College of American Pathologist (CAP) or the Joint Commission.
***Applicants must attach a valid legible photocopy of theircertificate to practice as a cytotechnologist issued by the State of California Department of Health Services to the application at the time of filing.
At the time of appointment, the successful candidate must have acertificate to practice as a cytotechnologist issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.
The required certificate MUST be current and unrestricted ; conditional, provisional, probationary or restricted certificates will not be accepted.
****In order to receive credit for any college course work, or any type of college degree, such as a Master's degree,you must include a legible photocopy of the official diploma, official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization; or official certificates with your application.
Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based on application information weighted at 100%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.
The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.
Applications will be processed on an as-received
basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months following the date of eligibility.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every six (6) months.
