Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, supervises and directs personnel in the Cellular Therapy Laboratory (CTL). Provides input into performance reviews of technical personnel. Is responsible for the coordination of laboratory Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and equipment maintenance. Maintains technical competency and fills in bench assignment as needed especially under emergent circumstances. Must be able to cooperatively work with a diverse team. Actions must consistently exemplify all HRO and CHAMP behaviors.

1. Supervises and directs the technical personnel in the CTL to assure that all operational needs are met and provides technical coverage as needed
1.1 Ensures that the timely and accurate reporting of technical and cell processing related issues; Meets established deadlines
1.2 Attends all departmental management meetings; routinely scheduled and any ad hoc ones that may be called by the CTL Facility Director or Medical Director
1.3 Oversees and monitors the performance of technical personnel in the CTL and provides the manager with documentation of employee's performance prior to his/her annual performance review.
1.4 Oversees staff schedule; assures adequate staffing and maintains an equitable division of labor. Approves routine vacation requests escalating concerns to the manager
1.5 Participates in the development, evaluation and writing of CTL policies or protocols.
2. Oversees CTL Quality Control, and technical competency programs
2.1 Reviews Documents and follows up on any omissions, errors or invalid results.
2.2 Works with the Laboratory Manager, Facility Director and Coordinator of CTL Quality Management to ensure that Quality Control and are up to date and are in compliance with AABB, CAP, FDA, JACHO, and FACT.
2.3 Ensures proficiency and competency is assigned and assed. Competency is evaluated through direct observation, internal and external proficiency samples, and record review.
2.4 Monitors the completion of proficiency samples and oversees completion of the respective paperwork. Enters or assigns a designee to submit proficiency testing results, via the CAP website, in a timely manner.
3. Demonstrates advanced technical competency by performing a wide variety of tests and procedures to ensure safe and effective human progenitor cell processing and infusion of products to patients.
3.1 Is the expert resource for technical questions in the CTL. Knows when to refer questions outside scope of expertise to the Facility Director or Medical Director.
3.2 Identifies when a test, procedure, component or piece of equipment does not meet performance criteria. Independently troubleshoots the problem. Assesses need to confer with manager or vendor to resolve problem.
3.3 Is technically proficient in human cell progenitor cell processing and infusion
4. Recordkeeping, Documentation, Computer Skills: Provides accurate documentation and reporting of results to ensure quality of patient care by demonstrating good computer and recordkeeping skills.
4.1 Clearly, legibly, and accurately completes any hand written record. Corrects handwriting mistakes according to standards.
4.2 Enters information and test results in the computer system accurately and thoroughly.
4.3 Corrects data entry mistakes according to standards
4.4 Accesses the Hospital, Laboratory Medicine, and Blood Bank computer systems only for information that is work-related
4.5 Handles phone inquiries and requests for results in a professional manner. Knows when a call should be referred to the Facility Director, Medical Director, or manager.
5. Independence/Initiative: Demonstrates independent thinking and action. Demonstrates ability to evaluate, troubleshoot, and problem solve.
5.1 Recognizes situations which are inconsistent with policy/ procedure or quality patient care. Documents all occurrences on the Variance Report form and performs immediate corrective action as necessary. Provides follow-up and makes recommendations for improvements that can be made as a result of the occurrence.
5.2 Researches and evaluates new products, procedures or equipment that would benefit the CTL by reducing costs, increasing productivity or improving quality. Makes recommendations for their implementation into the workflow. 5.3 Coordinates teaching activities for new employees, MT students, residents and others. Communicates effectively and maintains a positive, respectful, interpersonal relationship with learners.
6. Professionalism: Demonstrates professionalism at all times both in attitude and in approach to all work activities.
6.1 Demonstrates a commitment to personal career growth in the field of Laboratory Medicine and Cell Therapy
6.2 Ensures continued expertise and knowledge by attaining a minimum of 12 continuing education points each year, as defined in the Continuing Education SOP.
6.3 Demonstrates by example the importance of team work. Fosters a team approach to completing work and offers to help others. Maintains positive relationships with co-workers, supervisors, physicians and hospital staff
6.4 Listens well, fosters two way communication and creates open communication channels with staff and management.
6.5 Adheres to hospital policies concerning time limitation for break/lunch . Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling so that the CTL is adequately covered.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent required (ASCP certification, or equivalent, or certification eligibility required).
EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years? experience preferred performing high complexity laboratory testing. Cell processing experience preferred.
LICENSURE
ASCP certification or equivalent or certification eligibility required.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and materials used in a laboratory that performs high complexity testing.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
Bending, lifting,
Pushing and pulling of liquid nitrogen tanks periodically required.
Ability to lift and transfer 20 lbs.
