We are seeking a highly qualified and energetic PhD scientist to join us in the Structural and Molecular Sciences (SMS) department at the Pfizer Groton, Connecticut campus as a postdoctoral researcher focused on elucidating the three dimensional structures of integral membrane protein complexes that serve as important therapeutic targets. The successful candidate will be trained in the state-of-the-art science of membrane protein structural biology, be exposed to drug discovery and development process, and will learn the application of structural data for drug design. At SMS, we have extensive in-house experience and resources supporting membrane protein expression, purification, crystallization, and structure determination by both X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM. Presently, Pfizer scientists have regular access to all the major X-ray synchrotron beam lines in the world and well-established in-house cryo-EM facilities. Ideal candidates should have extensive experience in molecular biology, protein expression, purification, and characterization.
Design and optimize membrane protein constructs for functional expression and stabilization, 0-3 years of experience
Purification of membrane proteins and soluble partners/transducers for complex assembly and structural determinations.
Functional characterization of the membrane protein complexes by biophysical/biochemical studies.
Protein crystallization and data collection. Cryo-EM sample preparation and data collection. Data analysis and structure determination. Structure analysis to understand structure-function relationship. Design and characterize site-specific variants to evaluate structural hypotheses.
Interface with scientists across lines/disciplines and show strong initiative in developing ideas to assist in the design of exploratory experiments.
Collect up-to-date information and keep abreast of the relevant literature, data acquisition and analysis, manuscript preparation, presentation of study results in oral and poster formats.
Ph.D. in structural biology or biochemistry with extensive knowledge in molecular biology, protein biochemistry and wet lab protein structural biology skills.
Previous experience with protein construct design, expression and purification is required.
Previous experience with membrane protein desirable.
Previous working experience with X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM technology is a plus.
Demonstrated track record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently are essential.
