Summary This position is part of the Ashland Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office. As a Fish Biologist you will be part of a team tasked with using teamwork, creativity, and partnering to solve complex and evolving issues surrounding the long-term sustainability of priority native fishes and fisheries across the Lake Superior basin. This is a Term appointment, not-to-exceed 13 months, which can be extended for a total appointment of 4 years. Responsibilities Major duties at the full performance level will include, but are not limited to, the following: Conducts biological surveys on waters of the Great Lakes and connecting channel. Conducts studies of various factors affecting fish and fish populations. Prepares reports summarizing the results of biological surveys and studies. Operates and maintains specialized fish sampling equipment. Assists in the development of fisheries management plans. Travel Required 50% or less - You may be expected to travel for this position. BASIC REQUIREMENTS A degree with a major in biological science that included: (1) At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; AND (2) At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. OR A combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GS-9 LEVEL In order to qualify at the GS-11 level you must possess one of the following: Specialized Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the federal service that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include conducting biological surveys of waters for the preservation and rehabilitation of fishery resources; conducting studies of fish populations and performing data analysis; and preparing and presenting scientific data relative to fishery resources. OR Education: You must have completed 2 years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education or a master's degree with major study in fisheries or aquatics. OR Combination of Education and Experience: If you do not have the full amount of specialized experience or graduate education as required for the specific grade level, you may combine an equivalent amount of experience and graduate education to meet the requirements in full. To determine, you must first compute your experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine your graduate education as a percentage of the education required. NOTE: {only graduate level education in excess of that required for the next lower grade may be combined with experience}. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal to at least 100 percent for you to qualify. To be credited as specialized experience, technical work must be comparable to that which would have been gained in a professional series and clearly demonstrate that the applicant has the necessary background to perform satisfactorily the duties of the position to be filled. Professional positions generally differ significantly in the nature of the work (e.g., greater independence, responsibility, and judgment). Therefore, if applying for this professional position and you wish to be considered on the basis of a minimum one year of technical work experience at the next lower grade, your application must clearly evidence the variety and progressive nature (independence, responsibility, and judgment) of your work assignments and any applicable training or coursework completed. Education PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts. PASS\/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass\/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society. GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study. FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education.
