PATH is a global nonprofit dedicated to health equity. With more than 40 years of experience forging multisector partnerships, and expertise in science, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales up innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing health challenges.

The Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) program within PATH focuses on applying effective, innovative approaches to broadening access to and use of key MNCHN interventions that address the most pressing causes of maternal, newborn and child deaths, and poor nutritional status. Our approach includes: an emphasis on community-level action; a focus on improving the quality of existing health services, improving preventive and curative care across the continuum of care from facility to community level; a commitment to reaching underserved communities; a focus on working to understand and address barriers to high-quality care; and mobilization of social and political support to create and sustain an enabling environment for service delivery of key evidence-based interventions. Where appropriate, the MNCHN Program strives to establish public-private partnerships to advance our goals.

Through a contract with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), ICF implements The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program. The DHS program assists developing countries to implement household-based surveys in the areas of maternal and child health, family planning, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and nutrition and health facility assessment (Service Provision Assessment [SPA]) surveys, which are facility-based surveys designed to collect information on the preparedness of health facilities to provide quality services to clients. Currently, the DHS program employs some ~50 staff consisting of demographers, sampling statisticians, data processing specialists, public health experts, data dissemination specialists, editors, and document production specialists. Please review The DHS Program website at to learn more about The DHS Program and the measurement of biomarkers in surveys.

The MNCHN program is currently recruiting a Bio Marker Specialist who will support the Demographic Health Survey project’s expanding biomarker portfolio. The position is based in the ICF metro-accessible office in Rockville, MD

The biomarker specialist will be responsible for providing technical guidance to The DHS Program on the measurement of biomarkers in household-based surveys (“core” activities) and for the management of biomarker measurement in surveys in individual countries together with DHS team members (“field” activities).

Conducting assessments of host-country laboratories to determine the labs’ capacity to carry out biomarker testing.

Training and supervision of in-country laboratories to conduct assays or procedures that cannot be conducted in the field. Testing will include but is not limited to HIV, hepatitis B, malaria microscopy, and micronutrients.

Creatively contributing on ways to expand the biomarker portfolio including through literature reviews, partner engagement, and outreach to academic researchers.
