They research or study chemical composition and processes of living organisms that affect vital processes such as growth and aging to determine chemical actions and effects on organisms such as the action of foods, drugs, or other substances on body functions and tissues.
International biotechnologists conduct extensive analysis on key findings of market research initiatives done for major biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and healthcare organizations, and report to management.
International biotechnologists should have knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within their particular field. The knowledge should be such that it can be applied globally. International biotechnologists usually rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Most work under immediate supervision and typically report to a supervisor or manager. They are required to focus their broad technical laboratory skills on evaluation, optimization, and implementation of new technologies/platforms that improve the overall efficiency and accuracy of biotechnology applications (e.g., arrays, diagnostics, sensors, assays, drug discovery).
The most popular job titles that international biotechnologists work under are that of: research associate: responsible for research and development in collaboration with others on projects; research assistant; and plant breeder: responsible for the design, development, execution, and implementation of plant breeding research projects in collaboration with a larger research team.
