Medical biotechnology deals with the healthcare and pharmacy sectors. Discoveries in this field mostly pertain to the discovery of drugs, vaccines, diagnostics etc. that can altogether take the entire industry on another platform.Medical biotechnology has tremendous humanitarian implications, because a small discovery made by any medical biotechnologist can save millions of lives on the earth. With the opening up of global economy and the growth of pharmaceutical industry, there has been a surprising improvement in the medical biotechnology job market.
Medical biotechnology is a very rare discipline. In this field, trained manpower is in short supply. With global players focusing much on this field, the requirement of skilled medical biotech researchers will be high in the years to come.
Bio medical professionals find employment in pharmacy companies, hospitals, and hi-tech diagnostic centers that require people with technological knowledge and expertise in handling the equipments. The emerging and promising areas in medical biotechnology include: gene therapy and gene intervention; cell and tissue engineering; the use of stem cells for curative purposes; use of bio-sensors for diagnosis purposes; development of non-invasive imaging.
Medical biotechnology includes work in such areas as hematology, bacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology, immunology, serology, immunohematology (blood banking), clinical chemistry (including endocrinology and toxicology), and urinalysis as they relate to clinical laboratory practice.
